GM is now the first automaker with three full-size electric trucks either on sale or officially released with on-sale dates in the next 12 to 24 months. The 2024 GMC Sierra EV joins the Hummer EV and the Chevy Silverado EV on that list and utilizes the same Ultium battery platform to provide impressive performance and EV specs.
As with the other trucks, the Sierra EV will be launched initially in the top trim – the Denali Edition 1, a $107k crew cab truck with up to 400 miles of range and around 754 horsepower and 785 lb.-ft. of torque in Max Power mode. A dual-motor layout drives all four wheels, and allows the Sierra EV to hit 60 mph in about 4.5 seconds. Like the Hummer EV, the Sierra can do the Crabwalk. It can tow up to 9,500 pounds and carry 1,300 pounds of payload. The interior is a departure from current GMC trucks, with a vertical 16.8″ touchscreen reminiscent more of the setup in the Ford F-150 Lightning. Super Cruise with trailering will also be available.
Although Ultium is a 400V native architecture, the big battery Sierra will have the same 800V charging capability as the Hummer EV (the smaller packs won’t do this however) allowing it to peak at 350 kW and gain 100 miles of range in 10 minutes with the right DC Fast Charge station. The Denali Edition 1 will come first at an eye-watering $107,000 (remember, this battery is more than double the capacity of a Tesla Model X) when it goes on sale in “early 2024”. Sometime later, likely late 2024 or early 2025 the rest of the Sierra EV range will be on sale with a starting MSRP “around $50,000”. In other words, the 250-300 mile range model that’s “affordable” is likely at least 2 years away.
