4-Cylinder 2024 Mercedes-AMG C63 S E PERFORMANCE Revealed: The V8 is dead. Long live the AMG 63 Biturbo V8. For 2024, the AMG C63 gets a longer name and a more complicated powertrain. Sharing the same 2.0L twin-turbo 4-cylinder and AMG Speedshift multi-clutch nine-speed automatic from the new AMG C43, the C63 S E PERFORMANCE adds a plug-in hybrid element for a total of 670 horsepower and 752 lb.-ft. of torque. There is a rear electric motor with its own automated two-speed transmission, which upshifts 87 mph and gets help from an integrated electronically controlled limited slip differential.
To get more than 100 additional total horsepower out of this system versus the old twin-turbo V8, an AMG-developed 400-volt electrical architecture and high-performance 6.1-kWh battery help motivate that rear-axle 201 horsepower electric motor. The new setup creates a 50/50 weight balance front to rear. The battery weighs 196 pounds and can be plugged in to charge. The onboard AC charger is only 3.6 kW in intensity, but the battery is so small that it won’t take that long to charge. You can actually drive the car eight miles on electric power alone, but the mission is for bursts of performance, not long-range electric driving.
The car won’t make it to our shores until late next year at the earliest, but we look forward to driving it and seeing just how difference it sounds and feels compared to the old car. More on the 2024 Mercedes-AMG C63 here.
