Since the 2024 Ford Mustang made its debut back in September at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, we have still been left to wonder how much extra oomph the company gave this generation’s two main powertrains. The 2.3L EcoBoost turbocharged 4-cylinder and the 5.0L Coyote V8 currently make 310-330 and 450-470 horsepower, respectively. We now know that for 2024, the base tune of the EcoBoost engine will make 315 horsepower, an increase of 5. The higher 330 horsepower figure stems from the current generation car’s High Performance version of the engine which is a $6,150 option, but that hasn’t been confirmed to return in the new car just yet.
The Coyote V8 in the Mustang GT will now produce 480 horsepower and 415 lb.-ft. of torque, an increase of 30 horsepower. The higher 470 horsepower figure stemmed from the current Mach 1 model, which has not been confirmed to return for 2024. Ford has and will continue to offer an active exhaust package that will boost the GT’s horsepower to 486. They have not said how that will increase power on the EcoBoost engine just yet. If you’re curious about the new Dark Horse model, that will use the 5.0L V8 but produce 500 horsepower and 418 lb.-ft. of torque thanks to, among other things, a new dual throttle-body setup. More editions are expected to follow in the coming years, but for now know that if you want a manual transmission on your 2024 Mustang, you’ll have to get the V8.
