The rumors were true, it turns out the Honda Civic Hybrid is making its way to the North American market later this year as a 2024 model. No confirmation whether it will wear the same e:HEV branding as it does in Europe, but there is one surprise that can be confirmed: we will get the Civic Hybrid in both hatchback and sedan body styles. That means Honda can once again take the fight straight to the Toyota Prius with this upcoming hatchback hybrid. No official numbers have been announced nor will any be expected from the EPA for quite some time. However, specs for the European model are as follows: 2.0L Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder engine bundled with two small electric motors and an e-CVT making 181 horsepower and 232 lb.-ft. of torque. The upcoming Accord Hybrid makes more power than that, so our Civic Hybrid is expected to retain similar numbers as the Euro-spec car.
This news was not met with any follow-up details from Honda, instead the automaker promised more info would be shared soon. The press release that revealed this imminent plan went to great lengths to impress upon us that Honda is gently guiding customers into the electrification game. It has already been shared that their plan is to offer sensible hybrids like CR-V and Accord Hybrid, then when the time comes, ease them into a nice lease on the electric Prologue, the brand’s first full electric car (in the U.S.) coming later this year. The Civic Hybrid’s arrival will also coincide with the rising sales mix of CR-V and Accord hybrids. Honda hopes to hit 50% on that with the help of these latest generations sooner rather than later.
