Honda Unleashes the 2023 Civic Type R: It took awhile, but Honda finally decided it was time to introduce the next Civic Type R to the world. Only the second Civic Type R to make its way to North America, the 2023 model is the 6th generation for Japan and Europe. The only other models in Honda’s portfolio to be graced with the Type R tune are former iterations of Integra and NSX. Though we don’t have exact power output figures just yet, Honda says there’s an updated and more powerful version of the K20C1 turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder motor paired with an improved six-speed manual transmission with auto rev-matching. No automatic transmission will be available at launch, and it doesn’t look like one is coming. This puts Type R at somewhat of a disadvantage over competitors like Hyundai’s N models and VW Golf R, which offer excellent dual-clutch automatic options. The upcoming Toyota GR Corolla is predicted to receive a dual-clutch automatic transmission option in the coming years.
The new Civic Type R is the fastest and most powerful Honda-branded vehicle ever offered in the U.S. Whether it has more power than the current model remains to be seen. In fact, we don’t have too much more to share on it other than that. We know it is longer, lower and wider than the outgoing car. It will come in five colors: Historic Championship White, Rallye Red, Racing Blue Pearl, Crystal Black Pearl and Sonic Grey Pearl. Inside, bright red racing seats return, while a new ‘+R’ drive mode is on tap for a more tuned-in driving experience. Luckily, we don’t have too long of a wait for the new Type R, as it goes on sale this Fall.
