Biden administration intensifies U.S. fuel economy goals for 2026.

Today USDOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced the Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards will be intensifying for a new 2026 goal. The industry-wide fleet average requirement will increase to approximately 49 mpg for passenger cars and light trucks. This will be the strongest cost savings and fuel efficiency standards ever implemented. “Officials said that under the new standards, owners would save about $1,400 in gasoline costs during the lifetime of a 2029 model year vehicle. Carbon dioxide emissions would drop by 2.5 billion metric tons by 2050 under the standards”, the NHTSA said. More on this development here.

Mercedes-AMG releases pricing on the EQS 53.

The high-performance EQS variant has earned its flagship status with a price to match. In the U.S., it has now been officially confirmed that the 2022 Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 will start at $147,500. A standard EQS 450+ starts at $102,310 and lacks the AMG’s sportier dynamics and exterior appearance. The AMG will come standard with a lot more kit than that model, with two trim levels available: Exclusive and Pinnacle. Hyperscreen is standard on both, as are all of Mercedes’ active safety features (not Drive Pilot Level 3 just yet, though), and the augmented reality head up display. More details here.
