Polestar Plots Changes In Pursuit of Profitability

Polestar is planning big changes to its product line, but the stakes are higher than ever as it seeks to become profitable for the first time. The brand, once Volvo’s tuning arm, defined itself as an electric vehicle-only automaker when it split from the Swedish automaker in late 2017. While that part of its identity isn’t shifting with the new strategy, several other updates are on the way.

While Polestar will stick to an EV-only product line, it’s planning to add a splash of color to its catalog – something it has resisted since the beginning. Its current offerings have been defined by black, grey, silver, and white, but the company’s upcoming vehicles will likely come in more exciting shades, though we don’t yet know which ones.

Additionally, the Polestar 2 will get a successor, which the brand’s previous CEO, Thomas Ingenlath, said wouldn’t happen. The new car is due early in 2027 and will be an entirely new model rather than a revision of the now-aging Polestar 2. The Polestar 7, an SUV, will land in 2028, followed by the Polestar 6 roadster sometime in 2029.

The rear-windowless Polestar 4 just hit American streets, but new versions are already on the way. The current model will be renamed as the Polestar 4 Coupe, with a new wagon-like model on its way. Polestar said the new model will have a more conventional rear design with a window in place of the camera system the current 4 uses.

All of this sounds great, but Polestar likely still faces significant challenges in the North American market. The brand has stuck to its guns on electrification, even as many others have backed down. Still, it remains a small, niche automaker in a sea of big fish, many of which have lost billions of dollars trying to nail down a successful EV strategy.

That said, Polestar and its former parent company, Volvo, have the backing of their Chinese owner, Geely. Its deep pockets also fund Lotus, an even more niche automaker, giving Polestar a little bit more runway to figure things out.

What do you think? Do Polestar’s plans make sense? Would more colors and new models inspire you to take a drive? Let us know!
