It’s time to take our 2019/2020 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid up 7,300 feet above sea level to see what happens! We’re not just doing a normal climb, though. We’re towing a trailer with it. There’s a catch to that too. The RAV4 Hybrid has is carrying 250 pounds more than its rated tow rating of 1,750 pounds to see what happens. At the moment, the RAV4 Hybrid is the most capable version of Toyota’s popular compact crossover. Powering it is a hybrid system that pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with two electric drive motors, a lithium-ion (or nickel-metal-hydride) battery, and a planetary gear set. The total system output is 219 hp, meaning the electrified RAV4 is both the most efficient and powerful.
With that said, we’ve set up this test to push the RAV4 Hybrid to its limits and see if the hybrid powertrain can prove its mettle as the high-powered option. We also want to see what it’s truly capable of and whether this crossover is a viable option for people who tow small payloads on occasion. Will the RAV4 Hybrid survive the climb up and get back to home base in one piece? Or will we need to call for help during our test?
