The first major refresh for the fourth-generation BMW X5 and third-generation X6 have been revealed. Sporting the same front end treatment as the recently-refreshed X3 and X4, the mid-size Bavarian crossovers play catch up to the rest of the family. This rounds out the lineup following the fully-redesigned X1 that just went on sale and the refreshed X7 that also debuted last year. Head into a BMW dealership soon and you’ll be greeted with one of the freshest crossover lineups in the luxury segment. What’s new under the skin though?
Carrying over are the sDrive40i, xDrive40i and X6 xDrive40i models, but with a new 3.0L turbocharged inline-6 providing propulsion with help from a 48-volt mild-hybrid setup. The tiny electric motor produces 12 horsepower and 147 lb.-ft. pf torque, bringing the total output to 375 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque. 0-60 mph should take a tenth of a second less time to accomplish. M60i xDrive models carry over unchanged, but there is a new plug-in hybrid model, the xDrive50e. Compared to the outgoing xDrive45e, this new variant is nearly 100 horsepower more powerful and can scoot to 60 mph nearly a second faster. The new batter is 25.7 kWh and has an onboard 7.4-kWh AC charger. Total electric range is an impressive 40 miles, a decent improvement over the 45.
Inside the X5 and X6 adopt the single curved panel of screens that is proliferating throughout the lineup. This consists of a 12.3-inch infotainment screen and a 14.9-inch digital instrument monitor. New ambient lighting and active safety features, as well as fresh exterior paint choices round out the changes.
