The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Gains Significant Improvements for 2027

Mitsubishi is somewhat of a big deal in Japan, but it largely flies under the radar here. It’s still plugging along, however, and one of its best models – there are only three, to be honest – is getting a glow-up for the 2027 model year. The new Outlander PHEV arrives later this year with significant improvements, including more electric range and an updated interior.

Plug-in hybrids offer all-electric driving range, and the revised Mitsubishi gets a larger 22.7-kilowatt-hour battery, which boosts its range to 45 miles. That moves it closer to the segment benchmark, the Toyota RAV4 PHEV. It delivers an impressive 50 miles of driving range on battery power, though the RAV4 is slightly smaller and has less interior space. Mitsubishi also updated the Outlander PHEV’s battery tech, giving it an improved cooling system that allows more frequent electric-only driving and boosting powertrain output to 297 horsepower.

Cabin materials are improved for 2027, with new upholstery options, and the cupholders have been revised to make them easier to carry American-sized coffee mugs. The previous SUV’s optional wireless charging pad was small and difficult to align with most smartphones, but the automaker says the new version is much easier to use, and the cabin features more sound insulation for a quieter ride. A new 12-speaker Yamaha sound system is available, but a basic eight-speaker setup comes standard.

Other updates include new 18- and 20-inch wheel options, an updated front fascia with a revised grille and bumper, fresh LED exterior lights, and an overhauled suspension system. The current Outlander PHEV is nicer than expected inside and offers a competent driving experience, so these changes should make it even more compelling, even if it lacks the panache and refinement of some competitors.

Mitsubishi will offer four trims for the 2027 model year, including ES, SE, SEL, and Black Edition. Pricing sounds steep, starting at $43,245, but it’s in line with the Outlander PHEV’s rivals, such as the Toyota RAV4 PHEV, which has base pricing of $42,950, including a $1,450 destination charge. Interestingly, the standard Outlander SUV picked up mild-hybrid power for 2026, so the entire range will be electrified when the PHEV arrives later this year.
