So far, only one Volkswagen ID electric model has been available in the U.S., the ID.4. The retro throwback ID. Buzz is also scheduled for a 2024 on-sale date, but the next model we can expect to see on our shores is this – the Volkswagen ID.7. Debuting at CES 2023 as a camouflaged prototype, this model represents the flagship level of the ID line. It is a large sedan with a massive greenhouse that will make it extremely spacious inside, an effort surely made to lure away crossover buyers. Its closest competitor thus far, the soon-to-be-released Hyundai IONIQ 6, compromises rear seat head room for its dramatically sloping roof line. This looks to be generous in both rows, though no one was allowed inside the model on display at the event. To give you an idea of its size, this thing is three inches longer than the large Arteon sedan. The ID.7 will likely serve as that car’s spiritual successor when it goes out of production.
Inside you’ll find a large15-inch touchscreen that retains the touch sliders for controlling the temperature and volume we’ve seen in other new VWs. However, they’ve remedied our biggest gripe with these controls by giving them illumination for nighttime use. There’s also an augmented reality head-up display and an HVAC system that automatically adjusts the temperature depending on the outside temps. The air vents also electronically move and adjust to direct air flow, and will carry out a forest air effect when the car first starts up. The voice command “Hello Volkswagen” is also on board to help control main functions.
Volkswagen has only said that the ID.7 will get around 700 kilometers (435 miles) of range on the European WLTP cycle. Expect closer to 400 or below for the EPA numbers, but even is that is the case, the ID.7 will give the IONIQ 6 a goo fight when it goes on sale in 2024.
