VW has revealed the electric Golf replacement! In concept form…..that is.
Meet the ID.2all, a four-door hatchback with Golf-like proportions and design cues. Volkswagen says this vehicle shows off their new design language, sharing the new horizontal taillight bar motif found on the 2024 Atlas/CrossSport. We know that the ID.2all previews one of ten new EVs VW plans to reveal by 2026, which is past the current Golf’s shelf life. With the company full-steam ahead on the ID sub-brand, it would make sense for the ICE Golf to eventually sunset so the production ID.2 can fill its place.
This isn’t going to be another expensive and sickeningly-quick EV, though. The company says the ID.2all rides on the new front-wheel drive ‘MEB Entry’ platform, making it the first ID model to be front-wheel drive-based. It reportedly produces 222 horsepower and has a range of 280 miles on the European WLTP test cycle. They are also sharing that the battery can charge from 10 to 80% in about 20 minutes, though battery and charging specs and have not been provided.
The ID.2 is positioned to have a starting price of less than 25,000 euros in an effort to add more attainable sustainability to the electric landscape. When comparing it size-wise to the Golf, its overall length is shorter, but the wheelbase is nearly identical. Thanks to the packaging advantages of an electric platform, it should feel just as roomy, if not roomier than the Golf on the inside.
The dashboard borrows the bigger screens from the latest ID models, but has a new UI. As a clear response to the collective outrage over the current ID window switch design, it appears VW has given the rear windows separate controls on the driver’s door. They did not, however, address the collective distaste for the lack of physical buttons for infotainment and HVAC.
The big questions will be whether GTI or R versions of this model will ever be produced, and whether either will be offered here in North America like the current sporty Golf models. Let us know if you would by a Golf-sized electric car, hot or not.
