Think of the Lexus NX as the ritzier cousin of the previous generation Toyota RAV4 complete switch a more luxurious interior. When the crossover dropped by, we couldn’t help but compare it to the new RAV4 Hybrid. Let’s just say that Toyota currently has the leg up because of the RAV4 being on the TNGA-K architecture. The RAV4 also has the latest version of Toyota’s 2.5-liter four-cylinder based hybrid system, which makes 219 hp combined. Additionally, it’s more efficient to boot.
The Lexus NX may have the premium badge and the more luxurious trimmings but its age holds it back. An older version of Toyota’s 2.5-liter I4-based hybrid system only makes 193 hp combined yet its also less efficient than the newer system in the RAV4, which gets 40 mpg combined versus the Lexus’ 31 mpg. Why is the NX so inefficient even in hybrid form? Simple. It’s heavier than the Toyota because of all the extra creature comforts and sound deadening.
Is there a reason for someone to get the NX over the RAV4 Hybrid? Should you wait awhile until Lexus releases the second-generation NX that will also be on the TNGA-K platform? Let’s take a look and find out!
