According to a German outlet with juicy information about the fate of Mercedes-Benz’s EQ electric sub-brand, things aren’t looking good. Not for the products, just the name EQ itself. The company claims it will no longer need a separate sub-brand for its electric cars because it believes EVs will make up the holistic future of their lineup, therefore rendering any separate branding nonessential. Apparently, the EQ designation will start disappearing in 2024, with all EQ# vehicles becoming # vehicles like their spiritual predecessors. The decision is already a done deal, with timing being the final piece of the puzzle, a piece we will just have to keep waiting patiently for.
2024 happens to be the same year Mercedes is inaugurating its new MMA platform, one that is designed for electric vehicle propulsion but can also accommodate powertrains that involve internal combustion engines. That invites some speculation, for example, perhaps after 2024 an E Class lineup will consist of a car that looks the same on the outside but can be had in a variety of powertrains – hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric. Similar to BMW’s strategy. Again, we will just have to wait and see how this all plays out, but it certainly seems to be the trendy thing to do. BMW and Genesis are doing it!
