Ken Block, the man who started his career producing shoes for the needs of skateboarders and ended up becoming one of the biggest names in a completely different field – motorsports – has been killed in a tragic snowmobile accident right at the start of the new year. According to local officials in Wasatch County, Utah, where the accident occurred, Ken “…was riding a snowmobile on a steep slope when the snowmobile upended, landing on top of him.” He was a man of many talents and passions, from the bowls, the tracks, and the slopes. If it is any comfort at all, at least he died doing something he loved, which is not something that can be said for many people. If you followed his career closely, you knew that he was constantly doing and trying and failing and succeeding. He was the definition of living life to the fullest.
Block followed the motorsports industry as a kid but was much more drawn to rally driving than NASCAR. Born in Long Beach, California, he was immersed in the skating community but eventually got his hands wet in rally cars by his thirties. He was able to invest in the sport via the money he made from selling his DC skating shoes. He entered his first rally in 2004, Canada’s Rally of the Tall Pines. In 2006 he won his first race – Rally in the 100 Acre Wood – which he would win again five more times in a row.
