Ford Recalls Millions of Vehicles for Trailer Lighting Issues

Ford, one of the most recalled automakers of the last several years, is at it again. The automaker is recalling almost 4.4 million vehicles for an issue that could cause trailer lighting to stop working.

The recall impacts some of Ford’s most popular models, including the F-250, E-Transit, Lincoln Navigator, Expedition, Maverick, and Ranger. Most models come from the 2022-2026 model years, while the action impacts 2024-2026 Rangers.

Recall documentation posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) website states that the Integrated Trailer Module (ITRM) could lose communication with the tow vehicle, causing a loss of brake lights, turn signals, and trailer braking functions for some affected models. That problem puts the vehicles in violation of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), but it also significantly increases the chances of a crash.

Thankfully, there are warning signs if a vehicle is affected by the problem. The driver may see a warning message in the gauge cluster, noting a “trailer brake module fault,” and the turn signals will fast-flash. They may also see a warning message for a blind spot assist system.

Ford said it is unaware of crashes, accidents, or injuries related to the issue. The automaker said it would deliver a software update to remedy the problem, and vehicles with over-the-air update (OTA) capability may not need a dealer visit for the fix.

You may not use your vehicle for towing that often, but if you suspect a problem, it’s best to avoid pulling a trailer until you receive the fix. Owner notifications will be sent by late March, but you can head to the NHTSA’s website starting March 17 and enter your VIN if you suspect you might be affected by the recall.
