BMW has a new 3 Series in the works, and we won’t have to wait long to see it. The automaker plans to reveal the car around two weeks from now, but it’s taking a surprising approach to the launch. Recent reports suggest that BMW will release the electric i3 first, followed by the more traditional gas-powered 3 Series later on.
The new i3 sports significantly revised styling based on the Neue Klasse concept shown a few years ago. That means a wider kidney grille and new headlight design. While the look is somewhat controversial, it’s nowhere near as polarizing as the oversized grilles seen on other recent BMW models.
As for the gas-powered 3 Series, it will look and feel similar to the i3, but BMW is adamant that the two will be completely different animals. They will likely have slightly different dimensions due to the space and packaging required for a gas engine, and we expect to see at least a few different powertrain options, including a four-cylinder and an inline-six-cylinder, with mild-hybrid, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid variants. The automaker is also expected to offer an “M-light” trim, possibly wearing an M350 badge.
Interior finishes and tech should be similar to those of the iX3 electric crossover, which would mean a massive touchscreen and a wide upper-dash display. We don’t know much about materials and other options, but expect a range of synthetic and genuine leathers, as well as a possible sport seating option.
While it might feel like a bummer to see the electric i3 first, it should be encouraging that BMW plans to continue offering internal combustion for its volume-selling sedan. The automaker has confirmed that a new M3 is on its way, which will carry on with a six-cylinder engine. BMW’s standard powertrains have also proven to be capable of delivering more than a few thrills, so there’s reason to be excited for the new cars, even if the styling isn’t quite your cup of tea.
