Think of the Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 as one of two starter performance sedans (or an entry-level sporty four-door coupe) in the brand’s lineup. Is the A 35 too plain and conventional for you? Take a look at its swoopier and sexier sibling that’s also slightly longer. It uses the same 302-hp 2.0-liter turbo-four paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and performance-tuned AWD system. That means both the CLA 35 and A 35 are similar vehicles under the skin, it’s just a matter of which flavor your like best.
Should you choose to get the more stylish of the two entry-level AMG vehicles, get ready to pay a little more. The CLA 35 costs about $2,000 more than the A 35 to start. In typical Mercedes-Benz fashion, be careful when you’re adding options because this pocket rocket’s price will quickly skyrocket if you get too crazy. Yes, you can get a loaded CLA 35 close to $70,000 with all the options. At that point, wouldn’t you consider jumping up to the more powerful AMG C43 instead? Similarly equipped, the larger C43 isn’t that much more than the CLA 35. You get more room in a car that’s a little more potent that also has AWD standard. The only thing you miss out on is the new MBUX user interface.
