Maserati Reveals MC20 Cielo

Maserati reveals the MC20 Cielo, a drop-top ‘spyder’ variant of the MC20 that was revealed last year. What changes can you find on this open-air sports car? In Mercedes-Benz and Toyota fashion, the hard top utilizes a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal layer that “makes it possible for the roof to be turned clear or opaque in an instant.” At the flip of a switch, the glass can essentially act as its own sun shade. The glass implements thermal insulation to keep the cabin isolated from outside temperatures. The top can also be opened or closed in 12 seconds at speeds of up to 31 mph. The launch edition of the car, known as PrimaSerie, will be available exclusively in the ‘Acquamarina’ paint you see below. The body is a combination of carbon fiber and composite materials just like the coupé. It weighs only 143 pounds more than the coupe. This construction will also be shared with the electric MC20 to come.

The fixed-roof MC20 is powered by the Nettuno V6 that produces 621 horsepower and does 0-60 mph in less than 3 seconds. Power is routed to the rear wheels via an 8-speed dual clutch transmission. “Nettuno was conceived, developed, designed and built entirely by Maserati, and uses a pre-chamber combustion technology derived from Formula 1 engines.” With the same powertrain and the extra weight, expect the Cielo to be a tad slower.
