The second-generation Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been out and about in its home country of Japan for awhile now, but now we have details on the American-market model. The biggest improvement over the previous generation is the 38 miles of all-electric range provided by the new 20kWh battery. Overall power output sees a jump, too. The battery is joined by a 2.4L 4-cylinder Atkinson cycle gasoline engine and two electric motors which produce 248 horsepower and 332 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine and one electric motor motivate the front wheels while the other electric motor spins the rear axle. Combined hybrid system range will come out to 420 miles or so. Also, unlike the previous generation, you will be able to seat seven people in the 2023 model.
In addition to Mitsubishi’s Yaw Control mitigation system, the PHEV receives a larger 14.8-gallon fuel tank and Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control system (all-wheel drive). This plug-in hybrid system is not at all related to Nissan’s e-Power, it is a Mitsubishi-exclusive system that challenges the Kia Sorento PHEV for three-row plug-in hybrid crossover supremacy. The 2023 Outlander PHEV will go on sale in November for $39,845 before destination.
