Next-Gen Volvo XC-90 Variant Leaked: Today, Volvo has fallen victim to a leak similar to what Honda and others have been experiencing over the last few years – via patent design drawings. Not only have these images been uncovered (here), the trademark for “EXC-90” was also found by Motor1. Volvo promised us two things not too long ago, a refresh for the XC-90 and an all-electric variant that it will briefly live alongside. The name Embla has been tossed around, but is this that model? To us, it looks too similar to the outgoing XC-90 and not enough like the Recharge Concept they say it will be based on. Though Embla hasn’t been officially confirmed as the name, Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson did say that it will begin with a vowel…
Motor1’s discovery of the EXC-90 trademark could point us towards the final name. It begins with a vowel and alludes to ‘electricity,’ but we have reason to speculate that this name could be the name for the XC-90 refresh, not the full EV model. We really can’t say any more than that, it’s all speculation until Volvo makes an official statement. It was originally pronounced that the electric XC-90 replacement would debut this year, but we are quickly closing in on the finish line. The current Volvo XC-90 has aged quite well, and if we’re perfectly frank, this update appears to be a step backwards from the model that debuted way back in 2015. We will just have to see what these patents turn out to be in the end.
