It’s been a minute since RAM first announced it was working on an all-electric truck to rival the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T, but now we finally have something visual to work with. Behold the RAM 1500 Revolution BEV Concept, a caricature of the production model we will actually be seeing by the end of this year. It’s massive, tech-focused, and features a few world-firsts. For example, the cab itself is long enough to fit two jump seats behind the second row, effectively making this the first truck with a third row ever. There is a mid-gate like the Silverado, but as an added bonus, a pass through in the front truck allows items up to 18 feet long to fit inside the truck even with the bed closed. There are also cupholders in the frunk for additional functionality when…..head-gating? The tailgate maintains the ICE model’s barn door feature which can further extend the length of the bed when combined with the front-gate and mid-gate.
Unlike the GM electric trucks, the RAM 1500 Revolution rides on Stellantis’ STLA platform with a true body-on-frame construction. It runs on an 800V architecture that will enable up to 350 kW DC fast-charging when it reaches production. Executives have been quick to point out that, like the ICE 1500, the Revolution will also offer a variety of different flavors. So, expect a TRX model to appear in the future. Besides that, we don’t have any other major electric specs to cover. The interior, though, is loaded with things to talk about.
Up front, it is apparent that this will not be a work truck by any sense. Most things are controlled by the dual-touchscreen (28 inches total) that splits at the middle into two separate panels, one of which can retract into the dash to simplify the layout. Not unlike a modern minivan, all of the seats and consoles ride on a rail system that adds a ton of flexibility to the space. The roof features a really intricate electro-chromatic glass array that connects with the windshield. Another industry first is a small robot called the Ram Charger that automatically approaches the charge port and connects to charge the battery. Finally, a cool feature called Shadow Mode enables the truck to slowly follow a driver walking in front of it. It is intended for job site duties parking lot maneuvers, and is powered by the car’s Level 3 autonomous system.
