Volkswagen Unveils ID Sedan Concept: Previewing the Passat’s electric successor, the ID. AERO is a four door mid-size sedan that follows the ID.4 and ID. BUZZ in VW’s U.S. electric portfolio. However, this is expected to go on sale before the ID. Buzz because it was designed and engineered for our market as well as China’s, unlike the ‘BUZZ. As such, you’ll notice the sedan’s traditional proportions, 22″ wheels, short overhangs and long wheelbase. Volkswagen claims the ‘AERO has an exceptionally spacious interior, though no photos have been provided. Expect a similar theme to the existing ID. models.
Powertrain details are scarce, but VW says the ID. AERO is powered by a 77 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that can yield a range of up to 385 miles on the European WLTP cycle. This means we should expect closer to the mid-300’s from the EPA, but that is not bad at all. In fact, the AERO should put up a good fight against the upcoming Toyota bZ SDN, the Hyundai IONIQ 6, and the Tesla Model 3. How premium VW decides to make the car remains to be seen, though. Currently, the ID.4 AWD is the least expensive way to get an EV with power routing to all four wheels. If they can retain that value proposition, they may just have a hit on their hands.
VW says production of the Chinese/U.S. car and the Euro-spec car will begin in the second half of 2023. The production model should be fully revealed sometime between now and then.
